Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some of the most common questions we're asked, covering costs, permissions,
timings and what happens on the day. If you can't find what you need, our tree surgeons are always happy to help on 0115 971 3590 .

Costs & Booking

  • How much does tree work cost?

Every job is priced individually, as the cost depends on the size of the tree, access, how close it is to buildings and how much waste there is to clear. You will always get the exact price in writing first.

  • Do you charge for quotes?

Our quotes are free and without any obligation. Each one of our quotes fully outlines the work proposed and is provided in writing so you know exactly what's included. We always visit the site to look at the trees first, as that's the only way to price a job accurately.

  • How can I pay for my tree work?

We send a written invoice once the job is complete, and you can pay by either credit or debit card.

  • How far in advance should I book?

We're typically booked around XXX weeks ahead, so it's worth getting in touch early, especially for work you want done at a particular time of year. Let us know when you call if a tree is causing an immediate safety concern.

Permissions & Ownership

  • How do I find out if a tree is protected?

Your local council can tell you whether a tree has a Tree Preservation Order or sits in a conservation area, and many offer an online map or search tool. If you're unsure, we can check for you and handle any application needed.

  • What if the tree sits on the boundary with my neighbour?

When a trunk grows right on the boundary line, the tree is usually treated as jointly owned, so you'll need your neighbour's agreement before work goes ahead. We're happy to talk the plans through with both of you.

  • Who is responsible for a tree that falls in a storm?

Responsibility usually rests with the owner of the land the tree grew on, though liability depends on whether the tree was properly maintained. Keeping trees in good condition and acting on known defects is the best protection.

On The Day

  • Do I need to be at home while you work?

Not always, as long as the work has been agreed in advance and we can reach the trees safely. We'll just need clear access and to know about anything to look out for, such as pets, parked cars or delicate plants.

  • Will you need access through my house?

No, we'll always look for a side gate or alternative route first, and we'll discuss access with you when we quote. Where a garden can only be reached through a property, we take extra care to protect floors and doorways.

  • Do I need to move my car or tell my neighbours?

It helps to keep driveways clear so we can park close to the work and carry waste away easily. We'll let you know when we quote if the job will affect a shared drive or a neighbour's garden.

Trees & Your Property

  • Can tree roots damage my house or drains?

Roots can contribute to problems, particularly on shrinkable clay soils where thirsty trees draw moisture from the ground, and they can get into drains that are already cracked. Speak to a structural engineer or drainage specialist first, and we can then carry out whatever tree work they recommend.

  • What happens to the wood and green waste?

We recycle all of it into seasoned firewood and mulch. Just let us know before we start if you'd like to keep some logs or chippings.

  • Do you work for businesses as well as homeowners?

Yes, we work for commercial clients as well as domestic customers, including powerline clearance and site clearance ahead of development. That includes clearing trees and Conifers from sites for new housing.
